The Grossglockner is one of the ultimate goals for high-altitude mountaineers in the Eastern Alps. With its striking pyramid shape, the Glockner catches the eye of every mountaineer from afar. Even up close, it impresses with its firm and climbing-friendly rock. The Stuedlgrat (Southwest Ridge) in the Hohe Tauern range is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful ascents to the summit.
Day 1: Ascent to the hut
Route: From the Lucknerhaus to the Stuedlhuette (2,802 m)
Hiking time & elevation gain: approx. 2–3 hours | ↑ 900 m
Day 2: Summit Day Stuedlgrat & Descent
Itinerary: Early departure (depending on the hut breakfast time). The ascent leads across the Teischnitzkees glacier and continues onto the Stuedlgrat ridge, which involves climbing up to difficulty grade III (UIAA scale). The technical difficulty and the exposure continuously increase all the way to the summit of the Grossglockner.
Descent: Via the normal route to the Erzherzog-Johann-Huette, then continuing past the Stuedlhuette back down into the valley.
Summit & descent to the Stuedlhuette: approx. 7–8 hours
